2009 BMW 5 Series

2009 BMW 5 Series
Cool New Car Models
The current generation of BMWs follows a design theme the German automaker calls "flame surfacing," and the automotive press calls, at best, divisive. The current generation of the BMW 5-Series carries the "flame surfacing" design motif farther than any of its siblings, and while some reviewers like it, more reviewers detest it. The 2009 5-Series hasn't been seen, aside from drawings and heavily camouflaged spy shots. But it is widely expected to tone down the controversial lines, and though they're just speculation, the drawings the press has seen show a much more attractive car.

New technologies are certain to appear in the 2009 5-Series as well. Engines offerings will probably include low-emission diesels, new to the U.S. market, that have been well-received in Europe. Gas-powered engines will of course be offered, topping out with a 408-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 550i. A high-performance M5 variant probably will not surface until 2010.
What The Auto Press Says

What the automotive press has to say about the 2009 BMW 5-Series so far centers on the look -- the "flame surfacing" of the old 5-Series was panned by many critics, and reviewers seem to express relief at the thought that the 2009 5-Series could look as beautiful as it feels to drive, or at least sport a body that doesn't distract from its engineering.

Details of the drivetrain are sketchy at best. BMW builds a series of diesel engines that are very well-regarded outside the U.S., and the 2009 5-Series may well be the platform the German automaker uses to try to bring them here. With Americans searching for alternative fuels in the wake of skyrocketing gas prices, even BMW shoppers may be intrigued by clean diesels.

Here is what the press has to say about the coming 2009 5-Series:

* "After half a decade of flame surfaces, cat's-eye headlamps, and wild cutlines, BMW design is pulling back from extreme frivolities for the next 5-series, due in 2009 (wagon in 2010)." - Automobile Magazine
* Like other models in the BMW range, the current sedan's "flame-surfacing" styling is met with mixed reviews, and the Bavarian automaker will be toning it down for the next generation, more along the lines of the current 3-Series." - Autoblog

Key Details

The 2009 BMW 5-Series is expected to be lighter than the outgoing 2008 model, despite slightly larger dimensions. That may well enhance the already world-class handling of the car. A new system BMW has called "active yaw control" may further improve the driving dynamics.

Early spy shots of the interior appear to show a center console canted slightly toward the driver, and a revised instrument panel.

Automobile Magazine says "The drivetrain goes high-tech with brake-energy regeneration teaming with adaptive alternator control," as well as "a start-stop system with an upshift indicator for manual transmissions."

Stay tuned for a full 2009 BMW 5-Series review. Also check out information on the 2008 BMW 5-Series, available in showrooms today.

Keira Knightley

Knightley appeared in several made-for-television films in the mid to late 1990s, before being cast as Sabé, Padmé Amidala's decoy, in the 1999 science fiction blockbuster Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Knightley was cast in the role due to her close resemblance to Natalie Portman, who played Padmé; the two actresses' mothers had difficulty telling their daughters apart when the girls were in full makeup. Knightley's first starring role followed in 2001, when she played the daughter of Robin Hood in a made-for-television Walt Disney Productions feature, Princess of Thieves. During this time, Knightley also appeared in The Hole, a thriller that received a direct-to-video release in the United States. She appeared in a mini-series adaptation of Doctor Zhivago that first aired in 2002 to mixed reviews but high ratings

She was ranked #79 by FHM in the magazine's UK Edition 2004 100 Sexiest Women in the World list, #18 in 2005, and was named "the sexiest woman in the world in 2006". 2009 Bentley Continental GT

Cool New Car Models
The Bentley Continental GT is a luxury all-wheel drive coupe built in England. The more powerful and exclusive Continental GT Speed joined the Continental GT for 2008. The Continental GT?s 6.0-liter W12 engine produces 552 horsepower and 479 pounds-feet of torque. The Continental GT Speed features the same 6.0-liter W12, but generates 600 horsepower and 533 pounds-feet of torque. Both trims send power through a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission with steering column mounted gearshift paddles. Continuous all-wheel drive, traction control and stability control are standard equipment. A navigation system, Bluetooth, Sirius satellite radio, multi-zone climate control, heated memory power seats are standard on all trims. Premium grade leather and genuine wood trim are used throughout the interior. The Continental GT Speed features a dark chrome grille, lowered sports suspension, 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, and diamond-quilted leather seat facing and trim.

This 4-seat coupe features a luxurious handcrafted interior with a large variety of custom trim options, including aluminum and numerous types of wood veneers. Several wheel styles in chrome and painted finishes are available. Optional light-weight carbon ceramic brakes offer superior durability and reduce brake fade, where the brakes become less effective due to overheating in extremely demanding conditions. A rear reversing camera is also available.

Purchasing an older vehicle, such as the 2009 Bentley Continental GT, makes good financial sense. You're able to avoid the steep depreciation rates that occur with brand new vehicles. This essentially gives you the advantage of getting a 2009 Bentley Continental GT for less money than when it was new. If the 2009 Bentley Continental GT was properly maintained, you also have a good chance of steering clear of problems that would have developed when the car was new.

The amount you pay for an older car depends on various factors. One important element is where you buy the vehicle. You're likely to get a better deal if you buy it from a private party, as opposed to a dealer. On the other hand, a reputable dealer will normally have some kind of limited warranty, so you can drive away knowing that if the car breaks down right away, you'll be covered. Another factor that may affect price on a 2009 Bentley Continental GT is whether it's "certified" by the manufacturer. A certified vehicle will cost more because warranty service is provided that normally doesn't come with a used car.

When you're ready to purchase a 2009 Bentley Continental GT, be sure to check out our section on used cars. We have listings for thousands of models so it should be easy for you to find a 2009 Bentley Continental GT that meets your needs. We post valuable information specific to the vehicle, such as options, number of miles, as well as contact information so you can directly reach the seller. Or, if you are selling a vehicle, CarsDirect is an ideal place to post a listing. Every month, more than six million serious car shoppers visit the website.

2009 Bentley Azure

2009 Bentley Azure
Cool New Car Models
Stylish and powerful, the new Bentley Azure T is the world’s most elegant convertible and destined to become a future classic. With unique Bentley ‘T’ styling cues reinforcing its sporting stance, the 500bhp Azure T delivers driver-focused performance with the ability to transport four adults in first-class, open-top luxury.

The new Azure T, specified with the high performance version of Crewe’s iconic 6¾ litre V8 engine, is the latest in a line of Bentley models to bear the ‘T’ legend. The 1996 Continental coupe was the first modern Bentley ‘T’, followed in 2002 by the Arnage T, both flagship models with a distinctive sporting character and thunderous performance.

The Azure’s already striking form is now enhanced by 20-inch 5-spoke wheels and tyres, ‘Le Mans’ front wing vents, dark tint matrix grille and a sculpted, retractable Flying ‘B’ mascot.
For the performance-oriented Azure T, the twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 500bhp and 1000 Nm of torque – an 11 per cent increase in power and a 14 per cent increase in torque over its 450bhp/875 Nm Azure stable mate.

The famous Bentley wave of torque is even more prodigious than before and performance is significantly raised with a top speed of 179 mph (288 km/h) and a 0-60 mph time of just 5.2 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.5 sec). Member of the Board, Sales and Marketing, Stuart McCullough comments:

“The new Azure T reflects our passion for creating the world’s most exhilarating and prestigious convertibles that, true to the Bentley T tradition, blend sophistication with a powerful presence.”
2009 Bentley Azure T 2009 Bentley Azure T 2009 Bentley Azure T

A UNIQUE OPEN-TOP MOTORING EXPERIENCE

Based on the Azure, the Azure T offers a range of discreet exterior cues that further enhance its powerful stance and hint at its increased performance potential. Key ingredients of its distinctive appearance include design features 20-inch five-spoke, two-piece alloy wheels and ‘Le Mans’ lower front wing air vents.
Further distinguishing points from the Azure are standard features such as dark-tinted upper and lower grilles, ‘jewel’ fuel filler cap (made from billet aluminium) and door mirror mountings finished in body colour.

Like the Bentley Brooklands, the Azure T sports the iconic Flying ‘B’ mascot, which can retract neatly into the grille surround. Originally designed by motoring artist F. Gordon Crosby, the ‘B’ was first used on the 1930 Bentley 8-Litre.

With exterior lines that echo visual elements of the Bentley Mk.6 from 1946, the Azure was enthusiastically received on its original debut as a concept car at the Los Angeles Show in January 2005. Now, as the Azure T makes its own ‘debut’ at LA, Raul Pires, Manager of Exterior design for Bentley Motors, notes:

“The Azure’s proportions provided us with the ideal platform to work with when creating the new Azure T. The prominent haunches and ‘supermodel’ body inspired our designers to create a new interpretation of a Bentley convertible with the accent placed on a more muscular, sporting stance.”

Bentley’s designers highlight the 1955 Park Ward S1 Drophead Coupé and 1995 Azure as the main influences for the current Azure and Azure T. Like the ’50s convertible, the car has a deep body with a single feature line that runs along both flanks and rises at the powerful rear haunches before spearing off at the rear of the car. Similarly, the Azure T’s fast and flowing roofline is echoed in its seven-bow canvas roof that gives the car a visible sporting profile when raised.

Prominent wheel arches grace a slender, narrowing boot that results in a ‘horse shoe’ trailing edge. This elegant shape is reminiscent of the first Crewe-built Bentley, the Mk.6, and the overall effect is a subtle hint at the power and performance that lies beneath the Azure T’s bodywork.

Delicate brightware detailing accentuates the flowing lines of the Azure T and this includes rear tail-lamp bezels, exhaust finishes and slender strips that run the length of the car.

Significant time and effort has gone into making the Azure T’s folding roof attractive as well as highly functional. Operated hydraulically at the touch of a switch, the impressive, three-layer canvas roof is elegantly stowed beneath the rear parcel shelf in a matter of 25 seconds. Because the roof is held in a separate well area, there is no impact on the generous boot space which was designed to hold two sets of golf clubs and hand luggage.

The engine and transmission of the Azure T are identical to those already employed in the high-performance Arnage T and Arnage Final Series saloons. In this specification, Bentley’s remarkable all-aluminium 6¾ litre V8 engine produces 500 bhp (507PS/373kW) and 1000 Nm (738lb ft) of torque – with over 90 per cent of that torque available between 1,800 and 3,800 rev/min – figures that ensure the signature Bentley ‘wave of torque’ delivers effortless performance for a unique open-top convertible driving experience.

Each of these hand-made V8 engines comes with a black-finish air intake manifold bearing the signature of the team leader who oversaw its construction by Bentley technicians in the Crewe factory. The six-speed ZF automatic transmission ensures optimum flexibility, response and refinement. Three transmission modes (Drive, Sport and Manual) allow the driver to take full advantage of the powerful 500 bhp V8 engine.

A sophisticated electronic management system provides fast yet smooth gearshifts regardless of how the car is being driven. Another important feature of the latest Azure T is the separation of the sports suspension and sports gearbox settings, allowing the driver to select their preference for each system independently – via a ‘Sport’ switch on the dashboard for the suspension and by positioning the gearlever for the transmission’s Sport mode.

Bentley’s V8 guarantees outstanding performance levels. From standstill, acceleration to 60 mph is achieved in just 5.2 seconds (0-100 km/h 5.5 seconds), 100 mph reached in 12.1 seconds (160 km/h in 12.0 seconds) and a top speed of 179 mph (288 km/h) is possible.
2009 Bentley Azure T 2009 Bentley Azure T 2009 Bentley

The Azure’s double wishbone front and rear suspension is carried over to the Azure T unaltered. Set-up and fine-tuned to give a refined ride that best suits the character of this convertible Bentley, the system features coil springs with computer-controlled, adaptive electro-hydraulic dampers and automatic ride-height control with auto-load compensation.

The Azure T’s suspension delivers impressive body control in all driving conditions, while the new five-spoke, two-piece 8.5J x 20-inch Sports alloy wheels with 255/40 ZR20 Pirelli P Zero tyres further improve handling and road holding.

As an option, Azure T owners may specify an upgraded braking system with carbon/silicon carbide, cross-drilled brake ventilated discs. Measuring 420 x 40 mm (front) and 356 x 28 mm (rear), these discs are the largest fitted to any production car on sale today. With eight-piston callipers, the brakes provide impressive deceleration and also give an 8 kg reduction in unsprung weight, benefiting steering response, ride suppleness and acceleration.
This lightweight braking system ensures virtually fade-free use, time after time, and superb resistance to disc distortion under high thermal conditions. Under normal use, the brake discs will last the lifetime of the car and pad life is doubled compare to the standard system.

For Azure T and its Bentley stable mates, the Traction Control system is calibrated with the aim of avoiding all unnecessary reductions in engine torque. The ESP logic system, which is set up to allow spirited handling without any reduction in stability or safety, monitors the car’s overall stability rather than simply loss of grip to the wheels. This reduces the amount of intervention required and restores power earlier and more progressively, allowing the power of the Azure T’s V8 engine to be fully exploited.

The Bentley Azure T enjoys an 11 per cent power and 14 per cent torque increase compared with Azure and the strength and stiffness of the original chassis are such that no changes were deemed necessary, as Brian Gush, Director of Powertrain and Chassis, explains:

“The Azure chassis has always had an immense potential and this enables us to offer the extra power of our 500 bhp V8 engine and the driver-focused qualities of a true Bentley T without compromising ride comfort.”

Compared with the Arnage, the Azure T benefits from significant stiffening members. These strengthened steel parts lie in the sill section of the car and extend into the A-pillars that form the windscreen frame. Beneath the front and rear of the Azure, carbon fibre cross-bracing members reinforce the whole bodyshell, while adding far less weight than steel.

Strengthening has also been applied to the body structure behind the rear seats where an advanced rollover protection system is fitted. This immediately detects if the car is in danger of inverting and deploys two hoops that are integrated within the rear headrests. In conjunction with the strengthened front windscreen frame, these are capable of supporting 2.5 times the entire weight of an over-turned car.

EXQUISITE CRAFTSMANSHIP

Befitting its role as a new Bentley flagship convertible, the Azure T embodies a range of standard features that were previously unavailable or only available as cost options on the Azure. The seats and door panels have Diamond Quilting, the fascia features an ‘engine-turned’ aluminium finish (reminiscent of 1920s racing Bentleys), and the instrument faces are finished in Black rather than Parchment.

Bentley emblems are embroidered on the front seat backs and the rear seat centre, an iPod/USB interface is provided, while the full range of Bentley’s premium veneers is available, a knurled finish is applied to several handles and switches and a knurled, chrome gear knob is fitted.

The new Azure T will have a strong appeal to Bentley customers, as Trevor Gay, Personal Commissioning Manager at Mulliner (Bentley’s specialist commissioning department), explains:
“The Azure has always stood apart from the rest of the Bentley range and the higher-performance Azure T will allow customers the opportunity to use the Mulliner service to create a bespoke convertible to their exact specification.”

Although many of the most desirable Mulliner options are included in Azure T as standard, Bentley anticipates that the majority of buyers will request additional enhancements. Inside, the Azure T is everything customers would expect of a bespoke Bentley, offering the highest levels of hand-craftsmanship to a small, discerning audience. The interior offers a spacious, luxurious cabin to provide the ultimate in first-class, open-top travel for four adults.

As in every Bentley, craftsmanship and bespoke finishing are to the fore. Every item of trim, be it veneer, hide or chromed bezel, uses authentic materials.

Azure T is available in the full Bentley range of 42 exterior colours, 25 interior hides, and the full range of premium veneers, plus the comprehensive line-up of Mulliner options and its bespoke colour-matching service that enable Bentley owners to create a uniquely personal car.

Of course, the nature of a convertible means that its interior is often on display as much as its exterior and Bentley’s design team knew that the Azure T’s spacious cabin should make a strong a statement. Consequently, warm and inviting leather hide extend past the seats and onto the parcel shelf and this emphasises the dimensions of the rear compartment.

A new audio head unit with larger display screen and an SD (secure digital) memory card slot instead of the single CD slot is fitted. At the rear, a new hide-covered boot rail with coordinated leather trim and a chrome strip along the top edge gives the load area a tidier, premium appearance.

All Azure T models come with an iPod Interface linked to the Infotainment system, enabling customers to play their favourite music through the car’s audio system. The system is supplied with connectors for iPod, USB, Mini USB and a 3.5 mm AUX jack and includes a 12 volt power outlet for charging purposes.

As an option, Azure T buyers can specify the Naim for Bentley premium audio system. Created in partnership with Bentley by Naim Audio, a UK-based high end hi-fi manufacturer, this system features 10 speakers, a dual-channel sub-woofer and an 1100 Watt amplifier, plus eight individual DSP modes to reproduce true emotions and a ‘live’ concert-like experience.

In Azure T the sub-woofers are located in the rear passenger footwells and contained within a special enclosure to ensure the sound of this pure music remains within the open cabin.

2009 Bentley Arnage

2009 Bentley Arnage
Cool New Car Models
For 10 years the Bentley Arnage has been the very epitome of the high class performance luxury sedan. Long, broad and heavy, the Arnage series has still managed to provide some open-road thrills for those who can afford a Rolls-Royce but would prefer to drive themselves.
As Bentley has moved toward sleeker, trimmer luxury cars that trade a little heritage in the name of modern styling, the Arnage has become a bit of an orphan. Still, there will be those Bentley customers who are up crying at night, sad to see the Arnage go, especially in its potent twin-turbocharged Arnage T iteration.

To give the Arnage line a sendoff appropriate to a car costing multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars, Bentley has just announced the 2009 Bentley Arnage Final Series, a special edition Arnage limited to 150 units that epitomizes everything that has made the Arnage line a success despite its stratospheric price tag.

Dressed to the nines and carrying the most appealing parts of each Arnage model, the Final Series is both beautiful in the square-shouldered Bentley way and huge in the performance specs department. The fact that a vehicle carrying a scary curb weight of 5,700 pounds can still run 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and attain a top speed of 179 mph is testament to the powerful twin-turbo V8 sitting under the long, sculpted hood.

The rather-silly luxury Arnage Final Series touches we would expect from the Bentley of Bentleys include a retractable “Flying B” hood ornament, which can be electronically stowed in its own special compartment to prevent it from ending up around some car shwag collector’s neck. If you have been an Arnage fan since 1998 but have never been able to put your wallet where your mouth is, the 2009 Arnage Final Series is your final chance.

INTRODUCTION

(Crewe, 24 September 2008) — Since its debut in 1998 the Arnage has conveyed an air of sophisticated understatement as the four-door flagship of the Bentley range. Called the Bentley Arnage Final Series, the new model features a unique specification, combining the performance of the 500 bhp Arnage T with the refinement of the Arnage R and design elements from the Brooklands coupe, for the ultimate expression of British luxury and effortless power in a four-door saloon – a grand finale, for the grandest of Bentleys.

Hand crafted at Bentley’s Crewe facility, the Final Series is an exclusive run of 150 cars, a unique example of the marque’s flagship created to bid ‘farewell’ to the highly successful Arnage line in the most appropriate manner and style. A COMMANDING ROAD PRESENCE

For the last 10 years the Arnage’s combination of muscular lines and understated luxury have endowed it with a commanding road presence synonymous with all Bentley Grand Tourers, subtly conveying the car’s formidable performance potential. This powerful exterior profile is underpinned by a torsionally stiff bodyshell (with an astonishing 6,500 spot welds) that helps to deliver outstanding ride and refinement.

Based on the sporting Arnage T, the Final Series offers a range of discreet exterior cues that further enhance its powerful stance. Key ingredients of the distinctive appearance include a dark-tinted Bentley matrix radiator grille with Flying ‘B’ mascot and dark-tinted lower grille. The iconic Flying ‘B’, which can retract neatly into the grille surround, was originally designed by motoring artist F. Gordon Crosby and was first used on the 1930 Bentley 8-Litre.

The Arnage Final Series is further distinguished by exterior design features first seen on the exclusive Bentley Brooklands coupe, comprising 20-inch five-spoke, two-piece alloy wheels and ‘Le Mans’ lower front wing air vents.

Additional unique features include body-coloured front and rear lamp bezels, ‘jewel’ fuel filler cap (made from billet aluminium) together with ‘Final Series’ wing badges and polished stainless steel treadplates to the front doors.

EXQUISITE CRAFTSMANSHIP

The Arnage Final Series will have a very special appeal to Bentley customers, as Peter Guest, Head of Department, Body & Trim, explains:

“Thanks to its hand-built exclusivity and superb quality, Arnage has become a world-wide benchmark for automotive craftsmanship. The Final Series epitomises the truly bespoke feel we aspire to and are determined to maintain.”

Inside, the Final Series is everything you would expect of a bespoke Bentley, offering the highest levels of hand-craftsmanship to a small, but discerning audience. The interior offers a remarkably spacious, luxury cabin to provide the ultimate in first-class travel for four adults.

Many of the most desirable Mulliner options are included in Final Series as standard, most notably the hand-made waistrails with inset chrome strip with recessed Bentley badges, the new rear cocktail cabinet and document storage trimmed in hide, plus the beautifully designed picnic tables available in a choice of three premium unbleached wood veneers – all prime examples of Crewe craftsmanship.

Bentley is the only automobile manufacturer in the world to offer as standard a cabin trimmed entirely with leather hides – including the headlining. The hand-crafted steering wheel requires up to 16 hours of double-stitching.

A set of mirror-matched veneers for each car takes 13 days to craft, while 17 hides and almost 400 separate pieces of leather are used for the upholstery, trim and headlining. Arnage Final Series spans the many eras between traditional coachbuilding skills and 21st century high-performance automotive engineering.

As in every Bentley, peerless craftsmanship and bespoke finishing are to the fore. Every item of trim, be it veneer, hide or chromed bezel, uses authentic materials. Built by hand, the creation of each Arnage takes a minimum of six weeks and owners can take full advantage of Mulliner, Bentley’s specialist commissioning department, as Trevor Gay, Personal Commissioning Manager, Mulliner elaborates:

“Up to 80 percent of Arnage customers specify Mulliner features. Mulliner is completely dedicated to fully understanding their requirements and to delivering a bespoke experience and a uniquely high level of personal service.”

Arnage Final Series is available in the full Bentley range of 42 exterior colours, 25 interior hides, and three veneers, plus the comprehensive line-up of Mulliner options and its bespoke colour-matching service that enable Bentley owners to create a uniquely personal car.

To help customers finalise the specification of their Arnage Final Series, the Bentley design team recommends six classic colour and trim combinations – Titan Grey (with Anthracite interior), Royal Ebony (with Beluga), Windsor Blue (with Windsor Blue), Meteor (with Imperial Blue), Burnt Oak (with Burnt Oak) and Black Velvet (with Burgundy).

NEW FEATURE ENHANCEMENTS

Arnage Final Series buyers will also benefit from a range of standard and optional feature enhancements. Standard enhancements include:

* New audio head unit – with larger display screen and an SD (secure digital) memory card slot instead of the single CD slot.
* New rear cup holders – displaying Bentley craftsmanship, these removable cup holders attach to the front edge of the rear centre armrest, or can be stored inside the armrest.
* New hide covered boot rail – features coordinated leather trim and a chrome strip along the top edge.

New optional enhancements available at extra cost:

* iPod Interface – links to the Infotainment system and enables customers to play their favourite music through the car’s audio system. Supplied with connectors for iPod, USB, Mini USB and a 3.5mm AUX jack. Includes a 12 volt power outlet for charging purposes.
* Rear remote control – enables the rear seat passengers to control the infotainment system. When not in use it can be stored in a dedicated pouch inside the rear centre armrest.
* Naim for Bentley world class audio system – delivers the world’s best in-car sound stage. Created in partnership with Bentley by Naim Audio, a UK-based high end hi-fi manufacturer, this system features 10 speakers, a dual channel sub-woofer and a 1100 watt amplifier – the world’s most powerful production unit fitted in a car. Bentley is also the first car manufacturer to use a next-generation Digital Signal Processor (DSP) in its audio system which features eight individual modes to reproduce true emotions and a ‘live’ concert-like experience.

EFFORTLESS PERFORMANCE FROM CREWE’S MIGHTY V8

The engine, transmission, chassis and running gear of the Arnage Final Series are identical to those previously employed in Arnage T. In this specification, Bentley’s remarkable all-aluminium 6 ¾ litre V8 engine produces 500 bhp (507PS/373kW) and 1000 Nm (738lb ft) of torque – figures that ensure that the legendary Bentley ‘wave of torque’ delivers effortless performance for a unique driving experience.

Acceleration to 60 mph is accomplished in 5.2 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.5 secs) with 100 mph reached in 12.1 seconds (0-160km/h in 12.0 seconds). Top speed of the Final Series is 179 mph / 288 km/h. Each V8 engine bears the signature of the team leader who oversaw its hand-built construction in the Crewe factory.

The six-speed ZF automatic transmission, first introduced for the 2007 model, ensures optimum flexibility, response and refinement. Three transmission modes (Drive, Sport and Semi-Automatic) allow the driver to take full advantage of the powerful 500 bhp V8 engine.

DYNAMIC HANDLING, SUPERB RIDE AND AWESOME BRAKING

Significantly upgraded in 2007, the Arnage’s fully independent double wishbone front and rear suspension features coil springs with computer-controlled, adaptive electro-hydraulic dampers and automatic ride-height control with auto-load compensation. These endow the Arnage with impressive body control in all driving conditions, while the new five-spoke, two-piece 8.5J x 20-inch Sports alloy wheels with 255/40 ZR20 Pirelli P Zero tyres – originally developed for the Brooklands coupe – aid handling and road holding.

As an option, Final Series may be specified with carbon/silicon carbide, cross-drilled brake discs. Measuring 420 x 40 mm (front) and 356 x 28 mm (rear), these discs are the largest fitted to any production car on sale today. With eight-piston callipers, the brakes provide impressive retardation and also give an 8kg reduction in unsprung weight, benefiting steering response, ride suppleness and acceleration.

This lightweight braking system ensures virtually fade-free use, time after time, and superb resistance to disc distortion under high thermal conditions. Under normal use, the brake discs will last the lifetime of the car and pad life is doubled compared to the standard system.

The Traction Control system is calibrated with the aim of avoiding all unnecessary reductions in engine torque. The ESP logic system, which is set-up to allow spirited handling without any reduction in stability or safety, monitors the car’s overall stability rather than simply loss of grip to the wheels. This reduces the amount of intervention required and restores power earlier and more progressively, allowing the power of the V8 engine to be fully exploited.

50TH ANNIVERSARY FOR BENTLEY’S MIGHTY V8

The fitment of Bentley’s legendary V8 engine in the Final Series in its most powerful Arnage form is an ideal way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this renowned powertrain.

Drawing on the wealth of aircraft engine experience gained at Crewe – manufacturing thousands of Merlin engines to power such famous British WW2 planes as the Hurricane, Spitfire, Mosquito and Lancaster – the first Bentley V8 engine was designed and built in 1959.

The fact that Bentley’s V8 design has served the marque remarkably well for five decades should not come as a surprise, as Dr Ulrich Eichhorn, Member of the Board, Engineering, comments:

“The original forward-thinking design of the all-aluminium Bentley V8 was a masterpiece and so good that we have been able to improve it continuously for nearly 50 years.

“Today’s engine produces around two and a half times the power of its 1959 predecessor, fuel consumption is only 60 percent of the original and emissions are an incredible 99 percent lower.”

In 1959 the power and torque of that first 6.23-litre 90-degree V8 engine in the Bentley S2 saloon was officially described as “adequate”. Actual output was around 200 bhp with 400 Nm of torque. Today, the Final Series 6 ¾ V8 produces 500 bhp and 1000 Nm with over 90 percent of that torque available between 1,800 and 3,800 rev/min.

One of the reasons Bentley’s V8 engine has evolved so successfully is the position of the exhaust valves, high in the cylinder head with short ports, originally designed for rapid heat dissipation to help engine cooling. Decades later this meant that the catalytic converters could be quickly heated thanks to the short path from valves to catalysts, which benefits exhaust emissions.

Driven by the need to meet increasingly stringent exhaust gas legislation around the world and the desire of many Bentley drivers for more power, the V8 engine has progressively evolved over the years.

In 1962 an increased compression ratio enhanced performance. Seven years later, for the Bentley T-series, the V8 engine underwent a far greater power boost with a longer stroke increasing capacity to 6 ¾ litres, where it remains to this day.

The introduction of turbocharging in 1982 delivered an even more dramatic increase in power to 297bhp to create the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo. The later introduction of port injection systems and a charge cooler for the turbo further improved performance.

In 1999 the V8 engine was introduced into the Arnage, codenamed “F1”, with a single turbocharger, by now developing 400bhp/298kW and 616 lb ft/835 Nm of torque. This was followed in 2002 by the “F6” version featuring twin turbochargers, boosting power to 450bhp/336kW with 645 lb ft/875 Nm of torque.

The V8 engine underwent perhaps its most extensive development in 2006 taking power to 500 bhp and torque to 1000 Nm. The introduction of two low-inertia, quick-reacting turbochargers that operate with far greater efficiency at lower engine speeds, reach maximum turbine speed in half the time of the previous units.

Furthermore, a re-profiled camshaft with an all-new roller tappet system provided revised valve timing and substantially improved refinement. These changes also delivered increased power, enhanced durability and ensured compliance with European EU IV and US LEV II emission standards.

THE PERFECT MODEL TO BID ‘FAREWELL’ TO ARNAGE

Commenting on the final chapter of the Arnage story, Stuart McCullough, Member of the Board, Sales and Marketing, says:

“The Final Series is the perfect model to give our Arnage flagship a splendid send off. Handcrafted at Crewe, this exclusive run of 150 cars represents the ultimate expression of Bentley luxury and effortless power.”

2009 Audi S4

Cool New Car Models
If you've been wondering what Audi will bring to the 2008 Paris motor show, the suspense is over. Meet the 2009 Audi S4, the performance-tuned variant of the revamped 2009 A4.

We'll start with what lies underhood. Never mind the TFSI badging that adorns the engine's plenum cover; there's not a turbocharger to be found in this engine bay. Instead, the 2009 S4 uses an all-new 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 with direct fuel injection. Sure, Audi could have changed the nomenclature, but would Kompressor-FSI have the same ring?

Detail-picky enthusiasts will move past the misnomer once they see the benefits of the V-6. Audi says the engine pumps out 333 hp, while torque - a good 324 lb-ft of it - is delivered between 2500 and 4850 rpm. Both figures compare admirably with the outgoing car's 4.2-liter V-8, which produced 340 hp and 302 lb-ft. Perhaps most impressive is the V-6's fuel economy. Audi says the engine drinks twenty-five percent less fuel, and returns an average 25 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

Predictably, Audi has mated the blown V-6 to its ubiquitous Quattro all-wheel-drive system, but there are a few new mechanical tricks. To start, there's the optional QuattroSport active rear differential. Activated by hammering the car through a corner, the differential shifts power to whichever wheel is on the outside. Audi claims doing this allows the axle to not only push the car through the corner, but also negates both over- and understeer.

Other options further the S4's performance credentials. Though a six-speed manual is standard, an all-new seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission is optional. So too is a variable-effort steering rack, but we're most interested in the new Audi Drive Select system. Available with any of the above options, Drive Select can modify steering, suspension, differential, and throttle responses based upon preset Comfort, Automatic, and Sport settings.

At the age of sixteen Avril Lavigne was signed by Ken Krongard, the artists-and-repertoire (A&R) representative of Arista Records, who invited the head of Arista, Antonio "L.A." Reid, to hear her sing at the New York City studio of producer Peter Zizzo.

Avril Lavigne then completed work on her first album, Let Go. The Matrix, who worked extensively with Avril Lavigne on the album, commented on her songwriting, saying, "We had a fabulous and unique experience with Avril Lavigne, who was then a 16-year-old rapidly growing songwriter with tremendous raw talent. The songs were conceived on piano and guitar by four people: The Matrix (3) and Avril. Avril Lavigne was instrumental in the songs' creation. We were all very close during the making of the record." She also appeared on the cover of Playboy Magazine. She is likewise acclaimed to have wide variety of brand new cars.

2009 Audi R8

For those who recall the bad old days of the American diesel, the 2009 Audi R8 Le Mans might seem like a contradiction in terms.

Ask most Americans to describe diesel power and they’re likely to use words like “slow,” “smelly,” or “rough-riding.” Yet if you listen to the German automaker, the best way to describe the latest version of the R8 sports car, which is making its debut at the annual Geneva Motor Show, would be “clean and mean.”

The Brilliant Red two-seater on the Audi show stand is a direct descendant of the R10 race car that has been sweeping the global endurance circuit, including the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans , from which it, appropriately, takes its name.

And its attitude. In the engine compartment, the original R8’s competent gasoline engine has been replaced with a 6.0-liter V-12 turbodiesel. The horsepower numbers, at 500, are impressive. At 738 pound-feet, torque is downright menacing. In European trim, that translates into a top speed of just under 300 kmh, or 186 mph. And the Le Mans will launch from 0-100 kmh (0- 62.5 mph) in just 4.2 seconds.

The engine makes heavy use of the knowledge Audi racing engineers have gained trackside – from the decision to go with a 60-degree angle of the cylinders to the piezo-electric fuel injectors. The engine employs chain-driven camshafts and a chain-driven oil pump and is made of high-strength aluminum with a cast-iron-and-graphite crankcase. A pair of turbos provides a hefty 37 psi boost. And the latest emissions system ensures that the R8 Le Mans meets the tough new Euro 6 standard. (And would almost certainly be ready to comply with California ’s tough diesel regulations.)

As TheCarConnection’s Bengt Halvorson first reported in January, Detroit ’s silver R8 diesel was “covered in a special matte "Grace Silver" bodywork, and gets accentuated wheel arches and larger air openings relative to the standard R8, along with a rhombus pattern on the air inlets and outlets similar to those used on the RS vehicles. Another noteworthy feature is the race-inherited NACA ductwork in the middle of the roof, which brings cooling airflow down and across the engine's cylinder banks.”

“The V12 TDI also differs from the R8,” we first reported, “with its glass roof, restyled rear glass lid, and new air deflectors. Like in the R8, the engine bay can be displayed with special LED lighting.”

So what’s changed? There’s the new name, of course, and the Brilliant red paint job. Technically, the twin-turbocharged Le Mans is still a concept vehicle, a slightly renamed version of what we first saw at the Detroit Auto Show, in January. But well-placed sources tell TheCarConnection.com that a formal decision on production is approaching fast, and it would take some serious, as yet-unforseen obstacles, to scuttle the program.

Audi showed a Q7 hybrid concept which married a 4.2-liter V-8 with an electric motor that adds another 148 lb-ft (to make a whopping 473 lb ft). In typically German fashion, this makes the hybrid even faster, trimming the 0-to-62-mph time from 7.4 to 6.8 seconds. Fuel consumption is said to be fifteen-percent better. Top Audi officials insist that this vehicle will make it to production in 2008, but the company engineers we've spoken with think that the powertrain will be too costly; diesels are cheaper and just as efficient. Regardless, if high-end Toyota and Lexus vehicles continue to sell well in the U.S., a vehicle like this could see our shores even if it doesn't make sense in terms of pure dollars and cents.

The new Audi A8 has been described as a “supremely competent, utterly complete premium luxury sedan”. The Automobile Magazine has called the A8’s cabin “the sexiest sedan interior in the world”. Though there is weariness in the market in the present economic meltdown, key auto players like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are still introducing swankier, sportier and extremely sophisticated models. Audi’s new A8 is expected to make a dent in the up market auto sales.

The 2009 Audi A8 is an attractive car with a long body and a slightly arching roofline. “The sheet metal — its Armani suit — that wraps around the car is the best representation of the current Audi styling language and the huge full-length grille looks bold and luxurious”, according to Automobile Magazine. While driving, the new A8 is very “nimble, precise and responsive”, according to test-drivers. Along with the standard seventeen-inch rim wheels with 235-series all season tires, Audi also offers 18 inch and 19 inch rims with 255-series tires. Audi claims that the new A8 can go from zero to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 238 km/h.

Audi has reported in a press release “the 1,690 kg 2009 Audi A8 equipped with the company’s new 2.8-liter FSI engine features a standard fuel consumption of only 8.3 liter per 100 km (that’s about 34 mpg) and produces only 199 g/km of CO2 emissions” which is the best level in its class. The transmission has the conventional tiptronic 6-speed automatic. The updated Audi A8 executive sedan features new fog-lamps, new side mirrors with built-in turn signals, new wheels, new LED tail lamps, new steering system, new air suspension, as well as a set of new electronic assistance systems.

Reviewers find the interiors of the new A8 very “functional”. Its multifunctional steering wheel which has four controls and the standard Multi Media Interface (MMI), wood and leather interiors, comfortable driver’s seat have all come in for praise from reviewers. The MMI has been hailed as the “undisputed new benchmark among interfaces” for its simple, logical and easy-to-use design. Some of the other features include keyless ignition system, intelligent cruise control, 10 standard air bags and Adaptive Light System.

While conventional looking, the new Audi A8 promises to give stiff competition to the other luxury car manufacturers in the coming year.

2009 Audi A5

2009 Audi A5
Cool New Car Models
First, there was the older gentleman on the busy main street. As I rolled past in the Audi A5, he stopped dead in his tracks and made quite a show of pointing out the red sports car to his companions. There was a look of bedazzlement on his face. Or perhaps the Viagra choose that moment to kick in.

Then there was the trio of automotive engineers, busily wrenching away under the hood of a formerly British sport utility vehicle prototype. One looked up and then the others followed his gaze. Work immediately stopped and their eyes locked on the coupe until it passed out of view. The look on their faces seemed to be one of longing. They’d rather be under the hood of an Audi. Who could blame them?

Finally there were the teenage boys sitting on the bus stop bench. Once I started away from the red light, the guy closest to me saw the A5 approach. He elbowed his friend and soon there were six pairs of eyes staring in awe. To look at these guys you would’ve thought all of the 2007 and 2008 Playmates of the Month were passing by in a hot tub on wheels with half of them suffering wardrobe malfunctions at that very moment.

There are a million such stories when you drive an A5. Men and women of all ages gawk. It is a car that is not at all shy about its good looks. It’s got it and it’s flaunting it.

What is it?
The A5 is Audi’s middle child coupe, slotted between the smaller, spryer TT and the bigger, fiercer R8 super car. The A5 marks Audi’s return to the mid-size coupe arena after yielding to the competition for more than 20 years.

What’s it up against?
The A5’s main rival is the BMW 3-Series coupe. The Infiniti G37 and Mercedes-Benz CLK350 are also players in the mid-size coupe racket. Fortunately for the Audi, it’s the best looking of the quartet. Only the BMW is in the same zip code when it comes to sheer beauty, at least to this author’s eyes.

It would be easy to leave it there and let the A5 rest on its aesthetic laurels alone, but it’s not quite that simple. An A5 that’s fairly loaded with options will run you a little over $50,000. For a grand or two more, you can get an equally optioned up BMW 335xi coupe. The catch is the twin-turbo, inline six-cylinder under the hood of the Bimmer. Spool that puppy up and you’re heaps faster than the Audi; about half a second faster to 60 miles per hour.

The G37 causes even more of a problem by offering almost the same performance numbers as the BMW, but at a whopping $5,000 less.

At the bottom of the pile, the aging CLK350 is, quite honestly, dowdy, over-priced and slow. Thankfully for Mercedes, the next-gen CLK is almost here.

Or, you could spend a bit more end take home the more powerful S5 - that Leftlane reviewer Mark Elias recently drove.

Any breakthroughs?
The A5 is the first Audi to utilize the all-new MLP (Modular Longitudinal Platform) chassis architecture. The main advantage to this new setup is allowing a longitudinally mounted engine and transmission to be set farther back behind the front axle. This allows for a more even weight distribution, which results in better handling. This chassis also allows for flexible wheelbase lengths and will underpin the new A4, A6, A7, A8 and Q5.

Audi Drive Select, an adaptive steering, suspension and throttle mapping system, is now available on the A5. For instance, hit “comfort” and the steering weight is very light and easy to move; the suspension is at its softest; and the throttle eases into your acceleration inputs. Press “dynamic” and it’s entirely opposite. Firmer weighted steering for more precise maneuvers, stiffer suspension for better handling and aggressive throttle tip in.

There is also an “auto” button that will let the computer decide for you, but unless your grandma is in the car, pressing “dynamic” should be the second button you hit after the engine start button. You can also use the custom button to set up the various systems individually.

How does it look?
The A5 is beautiful, it’s true. If you see its face in crowed place, you’ll know right away - mostly because a pair of LED daytime running lights will be staring back at you. These two strips of LEDs make for a look unlike anything else currently on the road. They add a menacing look to a front end that’s already sneering. To hell with BMW’s “angel eyes;” Audi’s “angry brows” are king.

The LEDs are the reason most people stare slack-jawed at the A5 in the first place. From the lights, their eyes follow the perfectly sculpted lines all the way to the rear of the body. It’s at that point that they realize they are looking at one of the most unique, alluring new cars on the road.

A lot could be written about the A5’s near flawless design, but the photos can also do a lot of talking. A warning, however. Some of the A5’s beauty manages to escape the lens of most cameras. There have been countless cars in the past that need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The A5 is one of them as it holds back that last bit of “wow factor” until you’re standing next to one in the showroom reaching for your checkbook.

And inside?
You may grow tired of automotive journalists using lines like “typical Audi interior with high quality material, fit and finish.” Well, what can I say? There isn’t really a better way to say it. Audi is very good at making interiors with great materials that look, fit and feel great.

Inside there are grays and blacks offset by handsome aluminum accents. The design of the dash and center stack is simple and elegant. One need not be intimidated by Audi’s MMI interface. Given a bad rap by BMW’s iDrive system, Audi’s controls are really quite easy to pick up. For the most part, a day or so of using MMI should be all the lesson time you need.

While the inside of the A5 is quite a nice place to be, it’s not without faults. If you opt for the S-Line package (I’ll explain why this is a must shortly) you get seating surfaces covered in alcantara. That’s fine — only, it’s perforated alcantara. It seems to cheapen the look a little, though to be fair, you’ll be sitting on it.

Another problem with the seats is the side bolstering. The bolsters are pretty sizable, but when you have a car capable of these kinds of cornering speeds, they need to be bigger.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning the back seats. There are definitely two seats in back, but if you happen to have legs, sitting in them might pose a challenge.

But does it go?
Many of the A5’s initial critics said that the car doesn’t corner very well. They say it’s more of a highway cruiser than a sports car. After spending some time in the A5, I started to wonder if everyone was stupid but me. This A5 didn’t go around corners; it carved corners like Bode Miller, only, without the booze and lackadaisical approach. Want to take that corner posted 35 mph at 55 mph? Simple. It’ll rotate through that corner, hold the line with ease and then dare you to do it faster. Your courage will break before the grip does.

The reason my experience was so different from the others was the suspension. My car had the S-line package, which includes, among other things, a sportier suspension and 19-inch wheels with Dunlop summer performance tires. The S-Line package is a game-changer for Audi’s seductive coupe. It’s optional, sure, but it should be standard equipment for any enthusiast. Add the Drive Select on the test car and your handling will improve even more.

Speed-wise, as we’ve already said, it’s not the fastest car out there. Though to call it slow would be asinine as the A5 still manages a 5.8 second 0-60 time with the 265-horsepower, 3.2 liter V6 mated to a six-speed manual transmission Drop the hammer and you will accelerate with authority. Even with the high-revving V6, the A5 returned a 23 mpg average by the end of the week.

The six-speed, cog-swapper falls under the “pretty good” category. Somewhere in there, there is a notch, or some anomaly, that feels like third gear, but when you go there, it ain’t third. Overall, shifts are fairly smooth and the throws are a moderate length.

Why you would buy it:
The A5 gives you a little of everything. It’s a devastatingly beautiful car, is quick and handles very well when equipped properly. Even better, the fuel economy isn’t typical “sports car“ horrible.

Why you wouldn’t:
You crave the power of a V8, or BMW’s twin-turbo inline six, and aren’t willing to compromise.

2009 Audi A5 base price, $40,300. As tested, $53,490.
Premium package, $1,900; Technology package, $2,200; Navigation package with voice control, $2,390; Audi Drive Select package, $2,950; S-Line package, $2,900; Bang & Olufsen audio system, $850; Destination, $775.
